Alabaster at Warren Bay

Between Warren Bay and Watchet Harbour the red stone of West Cliff is laced with veins of a white mineral known as Alabaster.

This is used for making Plaster of Paris. Towards Blue Anchor it is found in large slabs soft enough to be carved into statues and ornaments.

If you should obtain a specimen of Alabaster be sure to keep it dry because it dissolves, which explains its wet appearance in the walls of many houses and gardens locally.

The best fossils are to be seen in Watchet Museum but you may have an opportunity to collect your own ammonites from the beach.
