Lynmouth
The devastating Lynmouth Flood Disaster in 1952 was the result of eight
inches of rain falling in 24 hours, high up on the saturated Exmoor peat.
The rivers were unable to restrain the raging torrent of excess water.
Bridges quickly became blocked with fallen trees and rocks. When they
gave way, giant waves of water gushed seawards towards Lynmouth, destroying
all in its path. |

Today there are most interesting displays about the Disaster
and this is of particular interest to school students finding the topic
on their curriculum.
See the shops! You really will enjoy browsing through the very many little
shops and almost certainly will not have enough time to see everything
in one day - there is a brass rubbing centre too! |

The River Lyn runs into the Bristol Channel and the whole area of Exmoor
is a delight of woodland valleys, high moorland and stunning coastal scenery,
great for walking and discovering natural wildlife.
Safety at sea is well looked after by the Lynmouth Lifeboat. A little
further to the West is Combe Martin - today the home of the Wildlife
and Dinosaur Park.
